Grand Canyon History: Tom Martin has been hiking in Grand Canyon from river rafting trips since 1969. In 2015, he completed a segmental hike of the entire 280-mile length of Grand Canyon. He’s boated much of the Colorado, Green, and San Juan rivers as a recreational boater. Martin has conducted well over 500 Grand Canyon related oral history interviews and moved dozens of historic photographic collections into long term archival storage. Author of award winning river and hiking guides, Martin also wrote the book Big Water Little Boats and built a replica of Grand Canyon’s first McKenzie River dory, the GEM. He edited Otis “Dock” Marston’s From Powell To Power and completed Volume 1 of Dock Marston; Grand Canyon’s River Running Historian. Martin recently built a raft out of Tule reeds and the raft was successfully paddled the entire length of the Colorado River in Grand Canyon. Martin co-founded the Grand Canyon Hikers and Backpackers Association, River Runners for Wilderness, and served for 6 years as Secretary of the Grand Canyon Historical Society. He worked for 20 years as a physical therapist at the South Rim’s Grand Canyon Clinic. Martin and his wife, Hazel Clark, own Vishnu Temple Press.
